JALLIANWALA BAGH
Memorial park where almost 2,000 people were killed and 1,200 injured during a peaceful demonstration by independence fighters
At the end of the First World War, demonstrations broke out following the arbitrary arrest of several leaders of the Indian National Congress. The governor of the Punjab sent General E.-H. Dyer to restore calm. On April 13, 1919, during a pacifist demonstration by independence fighters in Jallianwala Bagh, the British general gathered his troops at the only exit and ordered them to open fire on the crowd. Nearly 2,000 people were killed and 1,200 injured. Far from being denounced, this massacre was applauded by the House of Lords.
