ST. JOHN IN THE WILDERNESS CHURCH
Protestant church where Lord Elgin is buried, set in a cedar forest and featuring a stained glass window from Belgium.
Built in 1852, this Protestant church dedicated to St. John the Baptist is located at the entrance of McLeod Ganj, in the middle of a cedar forest. It houses a beautiful stained glass window from Belgium. This is the burial place of Lord Elgin, a Viceroy of India during the British Raj, who died in 1863 in Dharamsala. The spire and bell of the church did not survive the terrible earthquake of 1905, but the structure of the building remained intact.
