SANKAR GOMPA
monastery with a multi-armed statue of Avalokiteśvara, to be visited at puja time and at sunset.
The monastery (gompa) of Sankar dating from the XIXth century is a beautiful building of two floors. It is related to Spituk monastery and belongs to the Gelugpa order. The deity shrine (Dukar Lhakang) displays a beautiful statue of Avalokiteśvara with multiple arms. In the compound, you can also see a picture of the former greatest Lama of Ladakh, Kushok Bakula Rimpoche, who passed away in 2004. The best times of day to go are at Puja time (sunrise offerings), and in the late afternoon, at sunset time.
