ALCHI CHOSKHOR
One of Ladakh's oldest complexes, where you can visit a temple with three stucco statues of Avalokitesvara, Maitreya and Manjushri.
The path leading to the complex is full of local handicraft shops. To get there we advise you to take the signposted Indus View path, which will take you around the temples to the left, as is the Buddhist tradition. This complex is one of the oldest in Ladakh and also one of the most exciting. The diversity of representations, materials and techniques is amazing. Photos are not allowed inside.
The sublime Choskhor Temple Complex dates back to the 11th century, it is the only one in Ladakh to be built on a flat terrain. It was founded by the great translator Ringchen Zangpo, on his return from India. It is a beautiful example of Indo-Tibetan art. The entrance to the Sumstek Gompa is through a finely carved wooden portico, clearly showing Kashmiri influences. This three-story temple contains three superb stucco statues of Avalokitesvara, Maitreya and Manjushri. They are dressed with exquisite paintings. A large chörten is located in the center of the room. Unfortunately it is not possible to access the other floors to admire the work of the murals. The Lotsawa Lhakang contains a statue of Ringchen Zangpo alongside Buddha and Avalokitesvara. Nearby, the Manjushri Lhakhang has statues of Manjushri and Tara, as well as murals of the 1000 Buddhas. The Dukhang is the temple which is located closest to the river, one enters it by a wooden door decorated with sculptures. Inside, various statues and mandalas of great interest.
