DISKIT GOMPA
Ancient Diskit monastery dating from the century, home to a large 32-metre coloured statue of Maitreya Buddha overlooking the valley.
The ancient monastery of Diskit was founded in the 14th century by Changzem Tserab Zangpo. It belongs to the Gelugpa order. It is necessary to go up through a maze of small lanes to reach the gompa. In the sacred hall there are fascinating statues. The new monastery is located at the foot of the hill. The gigantic 32 meter high colored statue of Maitreya Buddha which dominates the valley was built in 2006 with three objectives: to protect the village of Diskit, to avoid a future war with Pakistan, and to promote peace in the world.
