MUMBA DEVI TEMPLE
A busy, noisy temple at the end of the Zaveri Bazaar, home to Mumba Devi and a centuries-old water fountain at the front
At the end of the Zaveri Bazaar stands the Mumbadevi Temple, a noisy, crowded place that houses Mumba Devi, a mouthless but powerful form of Parvati who gave her name to Mumbai. It is the oldest temple of the city and would have been built in 1675. It would have been destroyed in the 18th century and then rebuilt on the same site. In front of the temple there is a khara kuan, an age-old water fountain funded by the jewelry bazaar. The water, free, is poured to the thirsty with gigantic copper cans.
