MANI BHAVAN GANDHI SANGRAHALAYA
House near Chowpatty beach, Gandhi's former main residence in Bombay, now a place dedicated to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi
Close to the beach of Chowpatty, this house, which belonged to one of his friends, was the main residence of Gandhi in Bombay between 1917 and 1934. If the place does not have the emotional charge of the Gandhi Smriti in Delhi, the place where he was assassinated, it is nevertheless unavoidable. Inside this modest 3-story building, one can see on the first floor Gandhi's personal library, with over 40,000 reference books. This collection is used today by researchers, professors and students. Gandhian books are also available for purchase at the reception desk. On thefirst floor, there is a permanent exhibition of photos of the Mahatma's life and history. Finally, on the second floor, his room where he spent time working and organizing the liberation of India from the British yoke. We can see his famous spinning wheel, which he started to use here as soon as he moved to the Mani Bhavan in 1917. It is also from here that the first phase of the non-violent struggle began. In August 1920, he launched the famous noncooperation movement, in order to obtain India's autonomy and to free itself from the yoke of the British Empire. On the same floor, there is an exhibition of figurines retracing the highlights of the Mahatma's life, and by extension of the country's history. A must-see during your stay in Mumbai.
