DR BHAU DAJI LAD MUSEUM
The city's oldest museum, built in 1872 and featuring a large collection of archaeological remains, maps and photos
Formerly called the Victoria & Albert Museum, it is the oldest museum in the city. Built in 1872, it has a large collection of archaeological remains, maps and photographs that tell the story of Bombay. At the entrance, a life-size statue of an elephant, discovered by the Portuguese in the 16th century on the shore of the island that would become "Elephanta Island". In 1814, the British moved it to the Victoria Garden where it was later restored. Next door, a zoo in a sorry state.
