RAJA DINKAR KELKAR MUSEUM
Museum featuring Dr. Dinkar G. Kelkar's personal collection of over 20,000 items, divided into 6 galleries
This museum displays the personal collections of Dr. Dinkar G. Kelkar (1896-1990). This optician spent more than sixty years traveling around the country and collecting all kinds of art and craft objects. He bought his first work in 1920. It is a delicate painting of a plant in a flowerpot. He bequeathed his collection of over 20,000 pieces to the state of Maharashtra in 1975. The museum is divided into 6 galleries with an unfortunate lack of scenography.
The "L" shaped passage gathers various objects of large dimensions, often sacred, like this majestic bronze oil lamp.
The Gujarat gallery presents under a splendid carved wooden canopy traditional old chairs, a family temple and a collection of nandi.
The kitchen utensils gallery , with its evocative name, displays objects of everyday life.
The textile gallery displays beautiful woven pieces, an integral part of ethnic costumes as well as puppets and decorative pieces.
The lamp gallery contains religious objects used during pooja while others were used to light the houses when electricity did not exist yet.
The door gallery is without a doubt our favorite. It highlights a unique artisanal know-how in perdition. In the center of the room are beautiful wooden statues representing animals: a carousel horse, an elephant led by a warrior...
