White Catholic church, the city's landmark monument, built on a hill and accessible by zigzag stairs
Very photogenic, this white Catholic church is the emblematic monument of the city. A chapel was built on this hill in 1541 when Panjim was only a fishing village. In 1609, it was replaced by a more imposing church in Portuguese Baroque style. European sailors landed here and went there before sailing up the Mandovi River to Old Goa. The zig-zag staircases leading to it were added in the 18th century.
