The Nandi Temple, or Big Bull Temple, is one of the oldest temples in the city, built in 1537 by Kempe Gowda, founder of Bangalore. It is dedicated to Nandi, the sacred bull, vehicle of Shiva. Dravidian style, it dates from the 16th century. A huge granite monolith, the bull is regularly coated with peanut oil, which makes it shine. It is referred to as the largest Nandi in the world. It is 4.60 meters high and 6.1 meters long. Nearby is a temple dedicated to Ganapathi (Ganesh) and a park where it is pleasant to stroll.
