The Nandi Temple, or Big Bull Temple, is one of the city's oldest temples, built in 1537 by Kempe Gowda, founder of Bangalore. It is dedicated to Nandi, the sacred bull and vehicle of Shiva. Dravidian in style, it dates from the 16th century. A huge granite monolith, the Nandi is regularly coated with peanut oil, which makes it shine. It is referenced as one of the largest Nandi in the world. It is 4.6 metres high and 6.1 metres long. Nearby is a temple dedicated to Ganesh, as well as a strolling park.
