DEVARAJA MARKET
Market dating back to 1886, located in the center of town and offering over 1,000 colourful stalls that attract locals and tourists alike
This market, located in the heart of the city, dates back to 1886. The architecture of the enclosure is worth a visit. The many colorful stalls attract locals who come to shop there but also tourists in number, rightly so because it is one of the most beautiful markets in the south of the country. It has more than a thousand stalls and provides employment to more than 3,000 people. It attracts nearly 10,000 visitors every day. Opposite the main entrance, at the south gate, is the Dufferin Clock Tower or Chikkaghadiyara, a small clock tower built in the same year as the market in honor of Lord Dufferin, which is also worth a look.
As in any bustling market, you'll get caught up in the colorful atmosphere. Women in saris and colorful stoles stroll through the narrow alleys lined with vendors selling fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices, silk saris, bangles... but also bidis, the hand-rolled Indian cigarettes, or essential oils. The most famous cosmetic brands come here to stock up on essential oils that will be used as a base for their perfumes. It is the ideal place to buy high quality essential oils. Mysore is also famous for the production of sandalwood products such as soaps, incense and perfumed oils. The market will inspire you to take beautiful pictures, especially of the many flower stalls and pyramids of kukuma powder in different colors. Don't forget your camera!
