OMKARESHWARA TEMPLE
Temple dedicated to Shiva, built in 1820 by King Lingarajendra II, not far from the fort, followed by a large ritual pool
Located near the fort, the Omkareshwara temple was built in 1820 by King Lingarajendra II. By this effort, he wished to make an act of penance for having killed a Brahmin. Dedicated to Shiva, it presents a surprising mixture of Islamic and Hindu influences, with multiple roofs in the Kerala style and a central dome housing the idol, a lingam brought from Kashi (Varanasi). This dome, which is surrounded by four minarets, evokes the style of a dargah (Sufi burial ground). A large basin dedicated to rituals accompanies it.
