GOLCONDA FORT
A beautiful monument in the city's western suburbs, a 400-year-old heritage symbolizing the culture of the Nawabi people
Located in the western outskirts of Hyderabad, this majestic monument is a 400 year old legacy and a must visit. Built during the Kakatiyas period in 1525, the Golconda fort symbolizes the culture and splendor of the Nawabi. The magnificence of its architecture can be seen in its acoustic system, the structural splendor of its palaces and its ingenious water supply system. The fort was famous for its diamond trade and it is said that the famous "Kohinoor" diamond came from there. Erected on a 120 m high granite hill, the fort is surrounded by crenellated ramparts built of large masonry blocks weighing several tons. The design of the fort's ventilation system, allowing cool breezes to flow through, is a testament to the brilliant craftsmanship of the architects. The massive doors are studded with large iron spikes to prevent elephants from knocking them down. You will cross ruined palaces and mosques before reaching the top which offers a dazzling view on the city. The outer wall, strongly fortified and delimiting the entire municipality of Golconda, is 11 km long. In the days of the fort's splendor, the 10 km long road leading from Golconda to Hyderabad was a fabulous market place where jewels, diamonds, pearls and other precious stones were traded, famous all over the world. The tombs of the Qutb Shahi sultans, their queens and family members lie in the surrounding plain.
