THIRUVANANTHAPURAM ZOO
One of the country's oldest zoos, with 82 registered species and a vivarium housing various snake species
Established in 1857 by the maharaja of Travancore, it is among the oldest zoos in the country. It has 82 different species, including a rhinoceros, elephants and hippos, tigers, lions, panthers, monkeys, bears, hyenas... Only the birds and a few felines are caged, the others live in reconstructions of their natural habitats. The spaces are still quite small... There is also a vivarium inside the zoo which houses several species of snakes. The zoo is adjacent to the Napier Museum and the Sree Chitra Art Gallery.
