JANARDHANASWAMY TEMPLE
Temple built by a Pandyan king to replace the original temple dedicated to the god Brahma, which had been swallowed up by a tidal wave
The original temple is said to have been swallowed by a tidal wave. According to legend, a Pandyan king came to the site to do penance before Brahma for a sin he had committed. The god forgave the king and in return asked him to build another temple. At night, in a dream, the king was informed of the location of the idol of Vishnu, which was lying in the depths of the sea. With the help of fishermen, the king found it and reinstalled it in the temple. Then Brahma appeared and completed the rituals.
