Built at an altitude of 1,700 meters to conserve water for hydroelectric power generation, this imposing cement gravity dam was inaugurated in 1953. It is over 83 meters high and 238 meters long. It is open to visitors. Lake Mattupetty is a popular picnic spot for locals and tourists alike and offers a beautiful view of the mountains. Canoeing and horseback riding are also available. Elephants are sometimes seen on the shores of the lake when they come to drink.
