Early church, Fort Kochi's pride and joy as the oldest European church in the country

Dating from the early 16th century, it is the major monument and pride of Fort Kochi. St. Francis Church is the oldest European church in India. The most striking historical event celebrated in this church was the burial of Vasco da Gama in 1526. However, it was only a temporary resting place because sixteen years later his son Pedro da Silva de Gama brought his father's remains back to Portugal. It was in this choir that, for the first time in India, the sonorous songs of Rome rang out. The hand fans have remained intact.
