KALAKSHETRA ARTS VILLAGE
Foundation set in beautiful surroundings, offering courses in singing, dance, languages and general art theory
The Kalakshetra Foundation, or the Temple of Art, was founded in 1936 by the bharata-natyam dancer Rukmini Devi Arundale to contribute to the revival of the arts in South India. Set in beautiful surroundings, the foundation is reminiscent of the ancient gurukula. On this idyllic campus, classes in singing, dancing, languages and general art theory for future professionals are held in huts sheltered by trees. One section of the institute, the Crafts Education and Research Centre, is famous for its saris and woven textiles (sheets, blankets, etc.) made in traditional South Indian patterns. You can even buy the designs that appeal to you the most.
For a few rupees, tourists can attend morning prayers or meditate under the large banyan tree, wander among the small houses, admire the bungalow of classical Indian instruments, admire the statue of Vishnu, and watch and listen to the students taking their music, singing or dancing lessons, only from the outside so as not to disturb them. A map of the institute can be downloaded from the website. Classes are held in the morning between 8:30 and 11:30, Monday through Friday. Throughout the year, Kalakshetra organizes music and dance performances on the premises and in different parts of Chennai. A festival is also organized in December and January. On Christmas Day, children demonstrate their talents.
