TIGER CAVE
Pallava rock-cut temple dedicated to Durga, with a main door flanked by 9 carved tiger heads
The Tiger Cave is a rock-cut temple dedicated to Durga. Nine carved tiger heads surround the main door of the shrine, and the two smaller caves on the left are decorated with elephant heads. Five kilometers north of Mahabalipuram, this site, part of the temples built by the Pallavas in the 8th century, is somewhat shunned by tourists, yet it is well worth a visit. Excavations carried out in 2005 have also brought to light the Subrahmanya temple, located nearby, which is said to be even older.
