It is dedicated to Shiva, worshipped here as Prithvi (Earth), one of the five elements that make up the physical world. The temple covers 8 hectares and its gopuram, which culminates 58 m, has eleven floors and is one of the largest in South India. The whole is decorated with beautiful sculptures. 540 columns form the temple and each one is built from a single piece. 108 lingams are distributed in the galleries. In a courtyard, you can admire a mango tree to which the legend attributes more than 3 500 years of age: Shiva and Parvati would have married here.
