Grotto temple, 1 of the 6 homes of the god Subramaniya, with separate altars dedicated to Shiva, Ganapathy, Durgai, Vishnu
9 km north of Madurai, this cave-temple is one of the 6 homes of the god Subramaniya. It was here that Lord Muruga married Devayanai, daughter of Indra, after defeating Surapadman. At the entrance are 48 artistically sculpted pillars. Carved out of the rock, the Subramaniya temple fills with pilgrims on worship days. Its most secret altar is carved out of solid rock. Other altars are dedicated to Shiva, Ganesh, Durgai, Vishnu and other gods.
