This temple is one of the 108 Diviya Desam dedicated to Vishnu. It is perched on a picturesque wooded hill. Granite walls encircle and protect the complex. During the festival of Chithirai (April-May), when the celestial marriage of Meenakshi and Sundareshwar is celebrated, Azhagar, Meenakshi's brother, comes to Madurai for the festivities. Palamudhirsolai, one of the six homes of Lord Subramanya, is located on the same hill, about 4 km away.
