GANDHAMADHANA PARVATA
Mandapam, which preserves the footprints of the god Rama, attracts large numbers of pilgrims and offers a beautiful panorama of the island
Outside of Rameswaram on the island are a few other sites held sacred. Three kilometers west of the Ramanathaswamy temple, on a small hill, stands the Gandhamadhana Parvata on the highest point of the island. In this mandapam would be preserved the footprints of the god Rama and others maintain that the god Hanuman would have stayed here. It would be from this summit that the god half-man, half-monkey would have taken his flight for Sri Lanka. This site attracts pilgrims in number and offers a magnificent panorama on the island.
