THIRUVALLUVAR STATUE
Statue over 40 m tall on a rocky islet close to another island housing the Vivekananda memorial, accessible by ferry
Close to the rocky islet that houses the Vivekananda memorial is another islet dominated by a 40-metre statue of Thiruvalluvar, a Tamil moralist poet from the 1st century B.C. It was unveiled on January1, 2000. The ferry takes visitors from one island to the other before returning them to the mainland. A bridge linking the two islets is currently under study. Verses from the poet's Thirukkural , translated into English, are engraved on the walls of the building that serves as the base for the monumental statue.
