IGLESIA DE LA VERA CRUZ
Pretty neoclassical church affected by a fire during the 2019 social protests and numerous outbursts.
This attractive neoclassical church was listed as a Monument National in 1983. Construction began in 1852, under the direction of French architect Claude Brunet de Baines, a native of Brittany. After his death in 1855, the work was completed by Chilean architect Fermin Vivaceta in 1857. The church houses the Vera Cruz relic donated by Emperor Carlos V. However, during the social protests of 2019, the church suffered a fire that affected the façade and interior. By mid-2023, it was still closed.
