The city of Santiago was founded by Pedro de Valdivia at the foot of a hill and hosts numerous cultural events.

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the area's inhabitants called it Huelén, which means "cursed" in the Mapuche language. In 1541, Pedro de Valdivia founded the town of Santiago at the foot of this hill, which he named Santa Lucía. In 1872, Intendant Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna turned the hill into a public promenade, so that Santiago's inhabitants could stroll along its paths. An elevator leads to the top of the hill, which is crowned by a small square. This pleasant place to stroll is also the scene of numerous cultural events.
