This square, designed in 1743 by Don Jose Antonio Manso of Velasco, was the theatre, in 1814, of the heroic resistance of the patriots who, commanded by Colonel Osorio, were besieged by royalist troops. At the centre of the square, a monument dedicated to General O'Higgins commemorates this episode of the city's history.
