DESIGN UNIVERSITY
This university was born through the initiative of intellectuals such as Garmendia or Gonzalez which, in 1917, formed a pro-university committee and a hospital-clinic comprising nearly 23 people. Their application was heard and the inauguration of the university took place in 1919. Since then, it has grown steadily and has become one of the largest in the country. Its two major buildings are the Central Library, one of Chile's richest, and the Pinacothèque. The university has a large esplanade, lawns interspersed with a statue and a clock tower that is the symbol. The intellectual activity is intense and it publishes a cultural journal Atenea.
