The winter solstice, June 21 in Chile, marks the Mapuche New Year. An opportunity to revive the ancestral culture of this people.
For the Mapuche people, the end of the year coincides with the shortest day (which corresponds to June 21, the summer solstice in Europe). On this evening, the communities prepare to embark on great festivities, lighting bonfires and sharing a good meal. Reputed to be an oral culture, the Mapuche culture is then told through stories that enliven the evening. The next day, the new year is welcomed by continuing the festivities with all kinds of folklore and traditional activities.
