CASTILLO SAN PEDRO DE ALCÁNTARA
This castillo, built in 1648 on a small tree-covered mountain on the island of Mancera, was once used as a prison.
The island of Mancera, called Guigua Cabin by its first inhabitants and strategically located in the centre of Corral Bay, was the central defence point of the bay. The castillo (castillo does not mean "castle" but "fort") was built in 1648, on a small mountain covered with trees. Following this construction, the island reached its peak between 1760 and 1765. Later it was used as a prison, its situation making it a kind of Alcatraz of the vice-royalty of Peru.
