Alerce wooden cathedral built in 1856 in the mythical Athens Parthenon style, with 12 columns depicting the 12 apostles
Built in 1856, it is the oldest monument in the city and its location was warmly reserved by Vicente Pérez Rosales when he designed the city. The cathedral is made of Alaska wood and its style is inspired by the mythical Parthenon of Athens because of its four Doric columns. Inside the 12 columns refer to the 12 apostles. The chapel of San Francisco de Sales is in Gothic style. It has been restored many times: in 1941, in the 1960s following the massive earthquake in Valdivia, in 1975 and in 2002.
