These post-1960 earthquake houses on stilts are built in the ancestral Chiloé tradition.
Typical of the city and the archipelago, these houses on stilts are located at the northern entrance to the city, along the shore of the Castro fjord. The current buildings date from after the 1960 earthquake, but are built in the ancestral Chiloé tradition. The pillars, made of ultra-solid wood, are designed to sway with the tides, never wavering. These colorful fishermen's cottages are part of the local heritage.
