GLACIARES SERRANO Y BALMACEDA
These two glaciers can only be reached by navigating the Ultima Esperanza bay from Puerto Natales.
These two glaciers are part of the southern ice fields (Campos de Hielo Sur). These ice monsters can be reached by sailing on the bay of Ultima Esperanza from Puerto Natales. Departures (operated by different agencies) are in the morning around 8:30 am. You will then sail along Puerto Bories; after 1 hour of navigation, you will guess the Eberhard fjord. Half an hour later, you can see the Estancia Margot at the foot of Cerro Ballena. A further 30 minutes take you to an impressive colony of cormorants, which only stay here during the three summer months. The Estancia Perales (a very good choice for a nature, trekking, fishing, horse riding and agrotourism holiday) is the next stop; the scenery is superb. Possible to observe condors in the vicinity. Then, we discover the Balmaceda glacier, stuck on the cliff. It is 2,035 m high and just over 20 years ago it was at sea level. In good weather, the show is magical. The Serrano glacier is the last sublime vision of the trip. A small circuit allows you to observe the glacier from the bottom with the icebergs in the foreground. Otherwise, count 30 to 45 minutes to reach the viewpoint near the glacier, superb in good weather. Not as imposing as the Perito Moreno, not as majestic as the Grey, but a wild something that fascinates the eye: the grandeur of these untamed and untamed lands is likely to leave you with an indelible memory.
