MANO DEL DESIERTO
the 11-metre-high "Desert Hand" is both poetic and symbolic, sculpted by Chilean Mario Irarrázabal.
Those who have been sunbathing on the beaches of Punta del Este in Uruguay have already seen such a giant hand emerging from the sand. The sculptor of this 11 m high "hand of the desert" is the same one, it is the Chilean Mario Irarrázabal. It is built in the middle of the desert and was inaugurated in 1992. Its presence is more or less poetic or symbolic: some perceive it as a sign of good luck to travellers passing through, others as the representation of the victims of the dictatorship, reaching out of the ground to avoid being forgotten.
