MUSEO REGIONAL DE ANTOFAGASTA
Museum built by the Chilean government in Antofagasta, recounting the history of the region, including the saltpetre epic.
Built by the Chilean government in the port of Mejillones, this customs building, inaugurated in 1866, was dismantled and rebuilt in Antofagasta in 1879, on the site it now occupies. This museum recounts the history of the region and in particular the epic of saltpeter. What catches the eye is the incalculable number of pay slips in circulation at the time: workers were paid with tokens representing 500 g of bread, 200 g of meat, etc.
