The Reserva Nacional Pampa del Tamarugal is located in the Tarapacá region, in the municipalities of Huara and Pozo Almonte. This protected area covers 134,000 hectares and is divided into four zones. It is home to the country's largest native forest plantation, with one million trees spread over almost ten thousand hectares. It is also home to important remnants of historical and cultural heritage, such as the Pintados geoglyphs, traces of the Pacific War and saltpetre mining, and the Salar de Llamara puquios. The reserve is also renowned for its wildlife, including birds such as harriers, owls, pups and turkey vultures, as well as culpeo and chilla foxes. Flora includes tamarugo, algarrobo blanco, chulki and fortuna. Entrance fees vary according to age and nationality, with reduced rates for children, teenagers, the disabled and the elderly. Camping facilities are also available, but are currently closed due to the health situation. Access to the reserve is via the Panamericana Norte, 75 km from Iquique or 22 km south of Pozo Almonte.
