The Chinchorro people had funeral customs that involved removing the skeletons and skin of their dead...
The highlight of this place is that Chinchorro mummies are exhibited in situ. The Chinchorro people inhabited the coast between Ilo (Peru) and Antofagasta between 6,000 and 2,000 B.C. Because of their funerary customs, they removed the skeletons and skin of their dead, reinforced the skeletons with sticks and reeds and after replacing the skin, they painted the bodies black with manganese or red with iron oxide.
