PUNA PAU
It was in this quarry in the Parque Nacional Rapa Nui that the statues' headdresses and pukao were carved.
You can drive or bike to the Puna Pau quarry, northeast of Hanga Roa, along the Roa Rakei. This is where the statues' headdresses, the pukao, were carved. These large red cylinders come exactly from the interior of the crater of Puna Pau, a small extinct volcano.Hani Hani is a type of volcanic ash that has a red color because of the iron oxide present in the composition. If you climb a little higher, you can enjoy a nice panoramic view of the city.
