PAPA VAKA
An interesting archeological site with beautiful petroglyphs evoking the beliefs of the Rapa Nui culture.
An interesting archaeological site located at the edge of the track leading from Anakena beach to Tongariki. The site is characterized by numerous beautiful petroglyphs that evoke the beliefs of the Rapa Nui culture, particularly its symbolic relationship with the sea. Papa means "stone" and vaka "dugout". Other meanings include kahi, tuna, mangó, shark, and mangai, hook. The Rapa Nui people's need for control over the ocean and marine resources is evident here. One of the petroglyphs is 12 m long.
