NOTRE-DAME-DE-L'ASSOMPTION CATHEDRAL
Inaugurated in January 1884, the construction of Notre-Dame-de-l 'Assomption Cathedral was interrupted a year later following the death of Archbishop Alexis Guilloux. His successor, Bishop Tonti, gave a new impulse to the work in 1899, but the funds are missing, and once again the cathedral remains in work for a few years. Finally, it was under Archbishop Conan that a contract passed in 1904 to finish the work: armed concrete is used for the first time in Haiti to address seismic risks. On December 20, 1914, the cathedral was devoted, but it was only in 1928, when it was carillon, organ and altar of bronze and marble that Notre-Dame-de-l 'Assomption received its solemn consecration. Unfortunately, she did not resist the 2010 earthquake, which also prevailed with Archbishop Joseph Miot. Reconstruction projects are still in development, which would retain what remains of the facade and original columns by integrating them into a much more contemporary building. However, in 2018 nothing had been done yet.
