STRONG JACQUES AND STRONG ALEXANDER
To reach these two forts from Pétion City, you must take the road of Kenscoff and after Fermate, before Kenscoff even, bifurate at the level of the Baptist mission which opened a small museum (Fermate People's Museum, closed on Sunday) and proposes cheap handicraft. The first left post after the mission leads to the forts (a sedan, 15 minutes). It is important to note that access to these two forts is not the most obvious, and it may be welcome to prepare this upstream excursion, taking information from Port-au-Prince or Pétion City agencies.
Both were built immediately after independence, they had to protect the country from a possible return of the French. Fort Jacques was supervised by Alexandre Pétion himself, then general general of the Western Military Department.
With his three bastions and his round road, Fort-Jacques obviously cannot be compared to the Citadel. It remains one of the most visited monuments in the country, especially since its restoration by the National Heritage Institute (1980). A picnic area and parking have been arranged. Fort Alexander, never finished, is much less worthy of interest. However, it seems that the place is largely abandoned.
