Built in 1954, it is the oldest university in the DRC. It was once considered the most prestigious in Africa. Every year, 20,000 students graduate from its ten faculties. It was known as Lovanium University until it merged with the country's other universities in 1971. The campus is vast (400 hectares) and is made up of several dilapidated buildings on either side of a main axis overlooking the Notre-Dame de la Sagesse church.
