Inaugurated in 1993 by Mobutu as the Kamanyola Stadium in memory of a heroic battle in South Kivu against the Simba rebels, it was renamed, in 1997, LD Kabila, Stade des Martyrs de la Pentecôte, in memory of the public execution on June 2, 1966, of four politicians accused of plotting against the Mobutu regime. The stadium has a seating capacity of 80,000, making it the largest sports complex in the country. The Martyrs Stadium is also used for major cultural, political and religious events.
