Better known by its former name of Pont Maréchal (Mobutu, of course), this combined rail-road suspension bridge is the longest of its kind in the world (722 m). President Mobutu commissioned Japan to build it in 1979. This is the only bridge that allows you to cross the river on its middle and lower reaches. If possible, ask at the toll booth if you can cross on foot. This is the best way to fully appreciate the impressive "cauldron of hell", the permanent whirlpool dreaded by ships entering the port of Matadi.
