The multidisciplinary scientific center is located in Kisangani, in the heart of the equatorial forest. It is run by a consortium of national and international partners active in preserving the natural wealth of the Congolese basin. Its aim is to meticulously observe the flora and fauna, the quality of the river water and the surrounding forests. It also collects data on the state of biodiversity throughout the country, and trains researchers. The scientific and technical team has in-depth field expertise. It also raises awareness among local populations of the importance of preserving natural environments.
The intense collaboration established between researchers has since generated a large number of partnerships, including the Congo Biodiversity Initiative. The first international conference on biodiversity in the Congo Basin was held in June 2014, bringing together a large number of leading scientists in Kisangani. Confirming the city's status as a leading center of expertise in this field of study. The Centre boasts a small zoological museum open to the public, including some fine specimens of Gabon vipers, a collection of different bat species and other animal bones collected in the region. A visit to the botanical garden at the entrance to the campus is also worthwhile
