This memorial was built by Mobutu at the end of the 1970s to honor the memory of the soldiers of all nationalities who fell during the two Shaba wars, in the face of the offensives of the Angolan and Katangese rebels who plunged the region into mourning in May 1978. This place of remembrance and major historical episode is part of a circuit that retraces the stages and key sites of the battle and of Operation Leopard , which saw French and Belgian paratroopers jump on Kolwezi and liberate the town and the hostages.
