Symbolizing the site of resistance by the Force Publique mutineers in Luluabourg in 1944 (the shooting of Mukalamushi and Company), this spot became Place Léopold II from 1957 to 1972, where a statue of the Belgian monarch was erected. In line with Mobutu's 1972 policy of "recourse to authenticity", this monument was removed and the square renamed Place de l'Indépendance. Since then, the square has become a focal point for public parades and various military and police parades held in the city.
