LWIRO PRIMATE REHABILITATION CENTER (CRPL)
Go there and contact
This primate sanctuary was created in 2002 to collect and rehabilitate chimpanzees and other species confiscated as a result of illegal trafficking (poaching, sale...). The site was established on the edge of the Kahuzi-Biega Park, whose unique ecosystem it shares. The Primate Rehabilitation Center is home to some sixty chimpanzees and a dozen other species, housed in vast enclosures covering several hectares. As well as caring for the animals on a daily basis, the team's mission is to educate people about conservation and environmental protection. To this end, a conservation education center was recently inaugurated, welcoming schoolchildren, students and tourists to the site. Tourism development is also a priority. This allows visitors to visit the center and its residents (mainly chimpanzees and cercopithecines), perfectly complementing their visit to the gorillas of Kahuzi-Biega National Park, while supporting the project (entrance fees, by-products). All in a magnificent setting with a view of the lake in the distance. Ecolodges welcome visitors. Don't miss the magnificent library of the Centre de Recherche en Sciences Naturelles (CRSN), a vestige of the colonial era. It is admirably preserved. You can also bring your own tent, or stay in the research center's former colonial guest-house.
