KAHUZI-BIEGA NATIONAL PARK (NPNKB)
Listed as a World Heritage Site since 1980, the Kahuzi-Biega National Park (PNKB) covers 6,000 km² to the west of Bukavu. This park, which crosses South Kivu, North Kivu and Maniema, is home to remarkable flora and fauna thanks to its varied ecosystems, ranging from tropical forests to the peaks of the Kahuzi (3,308 m) and Biega (2,790 m) volcanoes.
Grauer's gorillas: The PNKB is famous for these unique primates, the largest in the world, which can be observed after a guided walk lasting one to two hours.
Trails and circuits: A 20-kilometre walking circuit allows you to discover the fauna, especially the birds.
Climbing Mount Kahuzi: A 7-hour round-trip hike offers spectacular views.
Social aspects and tourism
The park is working with Pygmy communities to integrate them into the conservation project. Facilities are being built to enhance the visitor experience, including huts, restaurants and camping areas at the foot of the volcanoes.
The PNKB can be reached in 40 minutes from Bukavu. By cab: $150, by motorcycle: $10.
